CIS accepts new students in April of each year. Often but not exclusively these new students have completed previous grade levels in another language and are now applying to transfer to an English instruction system. These students may require more extensive language support than those who enter in September. At CIS Tokyo the model used for the entrance of these students is the APRIL INTAKE PROGRAM. APRIL INTAKE students are "imbedded" in their age appropriate grade level classes. Students from grade K-6 participate fully in the IB PYP program units of inquiry, and grade 7-12 students attend all regular classes. Language support is provided for APRIL INTAKE students using a variety of models depending on the needs of the student. This program provides immediate inclusion in regular programming for new students and provides an excellent social and academic climate for the development of English language skills. APRIL INTAKE students in all grades are provided with three months of specialized support in the development of English skills. This program tracks the increasing English language skills of each child and recognizes the efforts of the student in terms of work ethic and progress as well as the grade level of English achieved. The PYP and Canadian Programs have grade level requirements for all academic subject areas and are evaluated during the three months also. Students who attend the three month APRIL INTAKE program usually increase their English language skills sufficiently to enter the regular Canadian program the following September. Continued extra small group English language instruction is provided during the regular school year for those students who require continued extra language support
