Canadian International School, located in Tokyo is an accredited Canadian school, which embraces the curriculum and philosophy of a Canadian education. Modern teaching strategies, provision of student enrichment units, recognition of various student learning styles, and a culture of academic support create a special learning community at Canadian International School Tokyo.
CIS - Tokyo is accredited by the Province of Prince Edward Island (PEI). The K-12 curriculum is the CAMET formerly APEF, Atlantic Provinces Education Foundation program, and is fully accredited in Canada. It is presently used by the provincial ministries of public education in each of the 4 Atlantic Provinces. Annual accreditation visits by on site inspections by the Ministry of Education in PEI are held. Please feel free to contact the International Education Coordinator at the PEI ministry of Education for confirmation.
CIS is also accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in California and International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (grades K3-6)
All CIS teachers must be certified by the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island (PEI). This certification requires that teachers provide a birth certificate copy, a statement of professional standing, and a certified university transcript. This standard of certification indicates that all CIS teachers have achieved educational standards required for employment in a public or private school in Canada.
The school day is from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Students arrive at 8:45 and leave at 3:05 (K3-6) or 3:25PM (7-12). The school schedule consists of 5 days with 6 (K3-6) or 7 (7-12) periods per day. There are 190 instructional days in the school year.
The CIS school year actually consists of several components as described below
1. Regular School Year
CIS delivers PEI (APEF) grade level curriculum for K-12 from September to June of each school year. Students must meet grade level curriculum outcomes for PEI curriculum outcomes as in Canada. All students (Gr.2-12) write entrance tests for admission to the regular program. K3, K4, K5 and grade 1 students have an oral interview.
The high school credit program follows the same guidelines as are in place in Prince Edward Island. The outline of the high school program (table 1) provides opportunity for achievement of the required entrance courses for most Canadian universities as specified in entrance requirements.
2. Summer School
During July of each year there is a 5 week summer school for incoming students who wish / need to improve their English skills and is usually for non CIS regular students. This is essentially an English Second Language (ESL) summer school. Occasionally some elementary regular CIS students who are struggling with the Canadian curriculum may also attend this session.
3. Saturday school
There are three twelve week blocks of Saturday school which begin in September and end in June of the school year. Usually non CIS students attend these classes. Sometimes students who hope to be admitted to CIS in a year or two will try to improve their English here.
In addition to classrooms CIS has technology labs, music and art areas, science laboratory, resource centre, fully supervised indoor and outdoor activity and play areas, gymnasium, and athletic centre. The four building school campus is three minutes walk from Osaki station.
Students from Japan and many other foreign countries attend CIS. The classes are taught in English and focus on what our students are learning. Small class size makes it possible for each homeroom teacher to become an academic mentor and advisor for students as they challenge the academic program. Teachers have high academic expectations for CIS students and provide support for students so that they can achieve their best.
